Obituary for Tyler J. North

Tyler James North of Port Orchard, WA passed away at the age of 30 at the University of Washington Hospital in Seattle, WA.

Tyler was an exceptional young man with a wonderful sense of humor and self-awareness. He loved to go camping and hiking outdoors at the Staircase Park in the Olympic Mountains. He was an avid on-line gamer and enjoyed playing Blizzard games. He had many online friends from all parts of the world.

Tyler was an Olympic College graduate with an ATA degree in Electronics. He also had a transfer degree to a four year college. While he was trying to get a job in the field of electronics, he volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. He really enjoyed building homes for people who cannot afford to buy one. He didn't mind if he was busy hanging drywall all day, helping install kitchen cabinets, or digging a ditch for the water line as long as he was helping someone else.

Tyler was just starting a new chapter in his life by working at Goodwill Industries when he collapsed at home one evening. A virus had attacked his heart and he was diagnosed with heart failure. Over the course of the next two years he was in and out of the hospital several times.

He faced his illness calmly and bravely and never gave up believing he would live long enough to get a heart transplant. His only complaint was that he was tired. He never felt sorry for himself. When asked by staff at the UWMC he simply stated that there were people worse off than he was. Even when he knew he was getting worse again and needed to go back to the hospital, he simply packed his hospital bag and said it was time. We went to the clinic and they put him back in the hospital for what was to become the last time.

He is survived by his parents, Walt and Nicky North; sister, Jodi North; paternal grandmother, Doris Carvey; paternal aunts, Rosetta Mower, Margie Moser, and Laverna Case; paternal uncles, John North; and maternal aunts, Christy Brinker, and Robin Crecelius; numerous cousins and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Herb Carvey; maternal grandfather, Don Soule; maternal grandmother, Claire Fezatt, and paternal uncle, James North.

The family would like to thank the staff at University of Washington Medical Center for their exceptional care of Tyler, especially during the last three weeks of his life.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Goodwill Industries, Habitat for Humanity, University of Washington Hospital, or the American Heart Association.
