Obituary for Doris L. McCarty

Doris Louise McCarty was born July 22, 1926 in St. Mary’s, Idaho to Frank Cox and Martha Kinnaird Cox.
She was the last surviving child of Martha’s eleven children by her three husbands. Doris was especially close to her sister Frances Logan and her family.
Doris grew up in British Columbia and Alberta. After her high school graduation, she left Canada to live in Bremerton Washington. There she met the love of her life, Thomas (Tommy)McCarty. They were married in July, 1945. They had three sons, Dennis, Jason, and Larry.
In 1948, Tom, Doris, and Dennis moved to Ketchikan, Alaska. In 1956 the family moved to Western Washington where their two younger sons were born. Upon returning to full-time employment in 1963, Doris was hired as secretary to the Pacific Lutheran University Book Store Manager. She performed so well in her four years in that position that when the then manager left for another school he advised the administration that it should immediately hire her rather than have any candidate search. She improved the services and sales at the store so much that within Several years she was able to have a new store built. She did the same when in 1970 when hired by the State began development of Evergreen State College. Doris was hired to design and operate its bookstore and when Denver University hired her in 1980 to take over their bookstore.
In 1985, Doris accepted an offer to operate the bookstore at Olympic Community, with a similar improvement in its operations. During her career she served on a number of regional and national bookstore committees and as a hired consultant for design and operation of at least six college bookstores.
Doris is survived by her three sons, Dennis, Jason and Larry and his wife, Cari, grandchildren Tom (Sarah) McCarty, Alex (Sara) McCarty and Morgan McCarty; and great grandchildren; Charlotte McCarty, Braxton Bancroft and Brighton Bancroft.
